How does an artistic practice evolve in a new city?

At the ‘Open Studio’ event of the Budapest Gallery’s Artist Exchange Programme in September, we will gain insight into the research, working processes and works in progress of three international artists in residence in Budapest.

Gundega Strauberga is an artist and visual researcher of Latvian origin based in The Hague, who is spending a month in Budapest as part of a partnership with the 1646 Experimental Art Space in The Hague. Strauberga (1996) is a Latvian artist and visual researcher based in The Hague, Netherlands. She currently works with the notion of reframing photographs - both literally and conceptually. Her practice engages the absence of personal archives and the complexities of memory, identity and photographic representation. Owing to her dual background in design (BA Design Academy Eindhoven, 2020) as well as photography (MA “Photography & Society”, KABK, 2025), Gundega's work often manifests as a hybrid of the two.

Leontine Köhn is a transmedia artist based between Munich and Paris, who works primarily with video and painting. She is spending two months in Budapest as part of a collaboration with Schafhof – the European Art Forum in Upper Bavaria.

Köhn is a transmedia artist working between Munich and Paris, primarily with video and painting. She studied Fine Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where she also completed a diploma in Curatorial Practice. Her research-based, interdisciplinary practice explores language and socially relevant questions, with a particular interest in voice, representation and power. Her work has been shown at Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles Paris, Lovaas Projects Munich and Skulpturenpark Graz.

Tozzi (born 1994 in Salzburg, Austria) works in Berlin and Salzburg. He is a visual artist who makes kinetic sculptures, computer animations and drawings. In 2020, Tozzi graduated with a BFA in Film and Animation from the Berliner Technischen Kunsthochschule. Currently he is studying sculpture at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee. His recent group exhibitions have been at Kunstverein Salzburg, Museum für Gestaltung, Zürich and Eigenheim Galerie Berlin. In January 2025, his solo exhibition „was immer war ist“ was on display at galerie met in Berlin, Germany. He has been artist in residence at the Salzburg Summer Academy and the Kara Agora Art and Research Center.
