Hans-Jürgen Geyert, a Holocaust-denying historian who had returned to Austria from the United States for his mother’s funeral, is arrested by Austrian authorities and charged under the 1947 Prohibition Act. Only one person agreed to defend him: Joseph Grosswald, a civil rights advocate from a family of Holocaust survivors. Grosswald’s father had committed suicide thirty years after his release from a concentration camp. At that time, his mother made her son swear that he would always stand up for the persecuted and the disenfranchised throughout his life. Grosswald therefore chose a career in law and spent twenty years defending those living on the margins of society. Although he considers Geyert a charlatan, he is convinced that Geyert cannot be imprisoned for his views.
