Everyone knows Molière's classic comedy The Misanthrope, a brilliant satire of the hypocrisy of 17th-century French aristocratic society. Its protagonist, Alceste, is devoted to honesty and despises social pretence, yet paradoxically finds himself in love with the witty, flirtatious, and gossip-loving Célimène.
