Decades have passed since the outbreak of World War III and the massive explosion that leveled Tokyo. By 2019, the city has been rebuilt, but Neo Tokyo has become a city ravaged by civil wars between gangsters, terrorists, religious fanatics, and motorcycle gangs. One such gang, the Capsules, is led by 16-year-old Kaneda. The youngest member of his crew is Tetsuo, whom the other gang members constantly tease. As a result, the boy is constantly trying to prove his bravery, and on one such occasion, he is taken captive by gunmen who transport him to a laboratory, where he is subjected to all sorts of experiments. When he is released, Tetsuo has changed: he becomes aggressive and is plagued by pain and terrifying visions. He realizes he has gained new abilities—he can easily kill people with a single gesture. And all of this is somehow connected to the mystery known as Akira. The anime adaptation of this landmark manga—which is equally influential—presents a terrifying “cyberpunk” vision of the future through its revolutionary ideas and visual elements.

The film depicts a dying society whose internal decay inevitably carries with it the promise of change.
