JULIEN KLOPFENSTEIN
Choreographer · Performer · Movement Director
Julien Klopfenstein is a French choreographer and performance artist based in Budapest since 2018. He develops and presents his work both in Hungary and internationally, working across contemporary dance, performance, and moving image.
He trained at the National Conservatoire of Music and Dance of Lyon and continued his artistic development at the Nederlands Dans Theater SI program in 2018.
As a performer, he has worked with Budapest Dance Theatre and as a freelance artist with a range of choreographers and companies, appearing on stages across Europe, including the 60th Venice Biennale.
His artistic practice is rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration with visual artists, musicians, and designers. Through performative, video-based, and site-responsive works, he explores the relationships between movement, space, sound, and dramaturgy—often approaching them through themes of hidden inner layers and experiences of isolation, more recently through a Butoh-inspired perspective.
Alongside his creative work, he teaches dance classes and leads movement workshops, and works as a movement director across artistic, musical, and fashion projects.
