Írok Boltja

More than just a bookstore.

Since the end of the last century, Japán, one of Budapest's most famous cafés, has become a popular meeting place for writers and artists.

Since the mid-1950s, it has been home to Írók Boltja, whose primary mission is to present and distribute contemporary and classic Hungarian literature in its entirety. In addition, it offers a wide selection of Hungarian and foreign-language books on literature, literary studies, philosophy, social sciences, and the arts, as well as magazines, dictionaries, and encyclopedias. A computer database also helps customers find what they are looking for.

Írók Boltja is also well known for its unique visual world and thematic window displays, each presenting a book or cultural event. Evoking the atmosphere and artistic role of the former Japán Kávéház, the store has a cozy tea room where customers can read on site, and which also hosts regular and popular book presentations, literary evenings, and writer-reader meetings.
