On May 1st 1974, a week after the 25 April revolution, ten film crews took to the streets to cover the huge demonstration that took place that day (it was the first May 1st celebrated in freedom for a long time), which also served as confirmation, if any were needed, of the success of the coup that had brought down 48 years of dictatorship.

In the 1970s, a house in Paris was home to dozens of Portuguese deserters fleeing the colonial war. Only the archives of the Portuguese political police kept traces of their anti-colonial activities. From one character to another, collecting amateur accounts and images, the film goes in search of this clandestine memory.

Between 1961 and 1974, 100,000 young Portuguese men went off to war in the former colonies. In the same period, another 100,000 left Portugal to avoid going to war. Much has been said, written and filmed about those who went to war. There’s nothing about the others, it’s a kind of taboo subject in our society. What role did these men who “fled the war” play in building the country? What routes did they take? How did they do it?
