Antoine (Denis Ménochet) and Olga (Marina Foïs) are a French couple living in a small Spanish village in the heart of Galicia. They spend their quiet lives growing crops and preserving dilapidated houses, but their relationship with their Spanish-speaking neighbours is far from idyllic. A proposed wind farm project is about to cause a rift, especially over the brutal fighting habits of a pair of neighbouring brothers. After a while, Antoine and Olga's lives are at stake.
Rodrigo Sorogoyen's (The System, Mother) rural crime thriller is reminiscent of John Boorman and Sam Peckinpah, but the unexpected twist and astonishing storytelling are already the hallmarks of one of Spain's most original contemporary directors. Sorogoyen is one of the few internationally who can make a compelling genre film while offering a chilling social vision. Set in the seemingly idyllic mountains of Spain, the bleak story of Monsters confronts issues that are also pressing in this corner of Europe.
Critics named Beasts one of the 10 best films at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and it went on to win awards in San Sebastian, Chicago and Best Actor, Director and Film in Tokyo. The year-end chart-topper has been nominated for 17 Goyas and the awards and nominations are far from over.
The Hungarian ant Rodrigo Sorogoyen brings his second masterpiece to the Hungarian audience, this time with the elemental performances of the thousand-faced Denis Menochet and Marina Foïs. The Monsters will be in cinemas from 30 March.
