The story of one summer, a summer of guitars, girls, cigarette smoke, booze and rock, new wave and post-punk. A 19 year old musician becomes the hero of the only rock club in Leningrad, a Soviet underground music scene and a rock club under the ever watchful eye of the authorities, when a star sees talent in him. But the relationship between mentor and protégé is threatened by the attraction between the initially shy boy and his wife.

Kirill Serebrennyikov's latest film, Summer, captures the rarefied air of the 1980s and the still hugely cult-like Viktor Coy and Mike Naumenko. The film, which focuses on the relationship between power and artists, is sadly topical in that its director has been accused of fraud by the Russian state during the filming and is currently under house arrest.
