Everyone knows the story of Cinderella. The miraculous transformation and rise of the heroine is a healing, hope-giving tale, first told in antiquity and told in countless versions around the world.
This new production by the Budapest Puppet Theatre sets the story in the 19th century, a time well known from costume films. The age of glittering balls, dance regimes and strict rules of behaviour. The age of the industrial revolution, of scientific discovery, of travel around the world. A world without Instagram, yet where appearances are more important than anything else. A world where science and physics can be real magic.
Cinderella, the adolescent daughter of an always-on-the-go ship captain, must overcome her stepmother's unloving ways and her stepsisters' abuse, as well as her own insecurities, to set out on her journey to adulthood. Her helpers are her boundless imagination, her insatiable thirst for knowledge and her unquenchable sense of justice. Will he succeed in finding his own path? And what happens if that path happens to be crossed by a heir to the throne fleeing his destined future?
