David Walliams is a contemporary English writer who writes novels for young children that explore socio-human issues such as exclusion, marginalisation, acceptance or rejection of difference. The protagonists of Grandma Gangster are a seemingly boring old woman, neglected by her family, and her 11-year-old grandson Ben, who is struggling with self-doubt. The boy is terribly bored at Grandma's on Friday nights, and Grandma can't seem to find a rapport with the teenager who has just grown out of childhood. But one day Ben makes a surprising discovery: his grandmother is hiding diamonds in an old biscuit tin. Maybe Grandma isn't who she seems?

The play is a sensitive and humorous account of the strange friendship between grandmother and grandson, and how, although it's not easy being 11 and 78, it's never too late to start playing.
