New age carnival
The emblematic event of the Szombathely summer, the Savaria Carnival, revived in the year of the millennium, invites guests looking for sophisticated summer entertainment to the city for the 22nd time this year. On the last weekend of August - from 24 to 27 - the Roman city centre will be the setting for a revival of the past, with a new look at the many corners of the city. The 2,000-year-old city will be dressed up in festive costume, offering a colourful and rich programme of educational and entertaining activities.

A Savaria Történelmi Karnevál országosan egyedülálló rendezvényként a katonai hagyományőrzők legnagyobb időtávot felölelő hazai „találkahelye”. A római kori harcászatot és katonaéletet megidéző legionárius csapatok, a testi épségüket nem kímélő rettenthetetlen gladiátorok, a fegyvereikkel mesterien vívó kora és késő középkori lovagok, valamint az őseink életmódját és harcászatát megidéző magyar hagyományőrzők a korhűség mellett a tanítva szórakoztatás jelszavát tűzték zászlajukra.
A Karnevál leglátványosabb, legegyedibb programja a hagyományőrzők és mutatványosok péntek és szombat esti felvonulása, mely során közel 1000 jelmezes vonul végig a belváros utcáin látványos produkciókkal fűszerezve a várakozás perceit
Szombathely
Szombathely is a city with county rights in the West Transdanubian region. It is the seat of Vas county, the diocese of Szombathely and the district of Szombathely. It is the oldest town in Hungary, and the first in Pannonia, it received its town status from its founder, the Roman Emperor Claudius. Szombathely is also known as the Queen of the West. It is the tenth most populous municipality in the country, the fourth most populous in Transdanubia and the second most populous in Western Transdanubia, the third most densely populated county seat and the most populous in the Alpine region. More than a quarter of the population of Vas county lives in Szombathely.
