The husband and wife have been married for nine years, have two children and live a conflict-filled life in a tenement flat in a housing estate. The wife is frustrated by her confinement, the husband by her anxieties, which are qualified as hysterics. Their clichéd attempts to normalise family life (trips, beaches, balls, the husband working abroad) fail. The husband eventually moves away, but soon returns: he cannot live with or without the family. The reconciliation and the beginning of a new phase of life are celebrated by the purchase of a new washing machine.
