Harry Goldfarb's only means of earning money is to regularly sell his mother's TV, for whom watching TV is the only meaning and entertainment in life. The money is for heroin and the TV is a good deal because Harry's mother always buys it back anyway.
Harry's mother Sara dreams of a different world. She'll do anything to get on her favourite TV show. She feels the only way to do that is to lose weight so she can wear the 'red dress'. The only dress she can wear on TV. She embarks on a fanatical diet, with the help of a drug prescribed by her doctor.
The drug initially has a fantastic effect on Sara. She starts to lose weight, feels full, energised and now she's pretty sure she's going to be on the TV show. Then the hallucinations start...
