His mother is dead and his father is always tormenting him with bad grades and daydreaming. One day he walks into a bookshop and finds a book that looks interesting. He is fascinated by the story of the Empress of Fantasy.
The Empress is growing weaker as her empire is threatened, and more and more of her territory is destroyed by the Nothing. The Empress feels her country is safe as long as she lives. But to stay alive, she needs a special cure for unimaginative and hopeless dreaming, and it is Atreyu who must deliver it.
Bastian lives through the events so much that he finds himself in the middle of Fantasia...
