Verdi: Falstaff

2023-04-01T16:30:00.000Z

Michael Volle in the title role of the last Verdi opera - the great German singer as a fat knight: at first glance, this is the thrilling encounter promised by the return of Robert Carsen's magnificently bloody production to the Met's Live in HD programme. And the formidable Falstaff is surrounded by a cast of performers capable of perfect ensemble acting, with such splendid singers as Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Mistress Quickly, or Ailyn Pérez and Christopher Maltman as the Ford couple.

"Tutto declina", or "everything is in decline", is the lament of the deceived Falstaff, who has just emerged from the Thames, in Verdi's comic opera, and this pessimistic turn of phrase is often quoted with approval by opera critics, both professional and amateur. And yet representative productions of Falstaff regularly refute this misgiving. This production, which bears the name of Robert Carsen, owes its very existence to a new type of international collaboration, involving the Met, La Scala, Covent Garden, the Netherlands National Opera in Amsterdam and the Toronto Opera Company. Then there is the fact that Daniele Rustioni, who is about to celebrate his fortieth birthday, will conduct the world premiere of what is perhaps the most promising Verdi conductor of the new generation, a clear refutation of the decline. Of course, there will also be young up-and-comers on stage, not just in the orchestra pit, but already proving their worth: the South Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park, chosen to play Nannetta, and the Ukrainian-born Russian tenor Bogdan Volkov, who will play Fenton. In any case, this Falstaff would be foolish to miss on Fools' Day!
