Classical Salon - Telemann's burlesque

Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most important composers of the Baroque period, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Handel. His oeuvre is very rich, with more than 3000 works in almost every genre of his time. His music was already influential in his lifetime and his works are still regularly performed today. The late Baroque era valued wit, humour and irony in art, and Telemann, always reflecting his times, regularly incorporated parodic elements into his compositions. This tendency is most evident in his instrumental 'burlesques', in addition to his theatrical works, in the form of unexpected or unusual turns of phrase that create absurd effects. The titles of the movements of these pieces often refer to classical literary works such as Don Quixote and Gulliver's Travels, and are almost programmatic in the Vivaldi sense.
