Szociopoly is about the life of poor families in small villages in Hungary today, the story of a young man who defies the village authorities. The inhabitants of the village, whose situation our viewers find themselves in, are poor families who can only rely on income from welfare, casual or undeclared work.
Teams of 10-15 spectators (each representing a family) have to live through the play for a month. They move along a board marking the days of the month, while actors present short scenes with the most notable inhabitants of the village: the loan shark, the policeman, the mayor, who directly address the audience, who have to make decisions: do they want to work in the black economy, pay the electricity bill, go to the loan shark for a loan?
We don't force anyone to take part in the play, anyone who wants to can watch the performance "passively", but our experience shows that even the most reticent person will want to have a say in the play and the fate of the family.
In the reality constructed by the play, everyone becomes poor for an hour or two and feels the squeeze of exclusion on their own skin. The emotional energy of the play is used to make the participants experience the tensions of everyday survival without work, money or resources.
Sociopoly won the Glass Mountain Award for Best Performance at the 8th ASSITEJ International Biennial in Kaposvár in 2016 and the EDISON Platform Award in the category "The World and Me" in 2021.
