UNSEEN - Selection of behind-the-scenes photos of Hungarian cameramen on set
The group exhibition UNSEEN presents behind-the-scenes photographs taken by Hungarian cinematographers during film shoots, most of which have never been exhibited before. Without aiming for completeness, this intergenerational selection offers a glimpse into the work behind the scenes from the cinematographers' distinct perspective. It provides insight into the processes behind the camera and uncovers previously unknown details related to certain movies. Through their unique viewpoint, the cinematographers convey their personal relationships with the films and their collaborators, while also offering a glimpse into the unique environment of film shoots.

Schedule
The photographs, each with their own distinct character, reveal the unseen side of filmmaking: the artificial world of technical elements and sets that the final visual reality of the film conceals. They capture actors during breaks, in costume, in the makeup room, or in rehearsals, existing in a state of transition between themselves and their on-screen characters. They also highlight the crew members, who are the otherwise invisible creators and operators of the film’s world.
While some of these photos serve as tools or have documentary value, the majority capture the atmosphere of the film’s visual world and the essence of the cinematographer's vision. Whereas the images from the film may achieve iconic status through their connection to the narrative, the behind-the-scenes photographs capture moments that shatter the cinematic illusion, revealing the constructed nature of cinema. They capture the delicate thresholds between reality and fiction, and the encounters where these two realms intertwine.
As a satellite program to the first Budapest International Film Festival (BIFF), the exhibition highlights key moments in Hungarian film history from recent decades, significant milestones in the careers of the creators, their distinctive stylistic traits, and their personal memories. Beyond showcasing never-before-seen photographs, this exhibition, like the full BIFF program, aims to provide a space for professional discourse among cinematographers and the broader film community.
After the exhibition opening, a photo will be taken of the former cinematography classes from SZFE. Come and don't miss out on your class photo! The pictures will be shot on film by photographer Zsófi Sivak.
