Zoltán Szakmáry has 300 acres in the sandy wasteland of the Great Plain. He has many plans to turn the remaining family estate into a thriving model farm. He has a wife and three beautiful children, but he and his wife have been estranged for some time. Proud and sassy, Eszter Rhédey has no enthusiasm for winter melons, sand grapes or hybrid piglets, only a string of failures and mounting debts. And she is particularly terrified that her husband will force her to sign more bills of exchange. When she stiffens her resolve, Zoltán Szakmáry's feet start to wobble. She goes out to the farm to have fun with her gentleman friends and to hug Roziká, the little hired girl.
The Gentlemanly Muri was first published in book form in 1928. At the same time, the Vígszínház already staged it, but rewrote the ending and changed it to a happy ending with the author. (Comedy in seven pictures - was the title of the poster of the premiere, which was marked with the names of Artúr Somlay, Mária Simonyi and Erzsi Somogyi. ) "Well, thank goodness, now the play has finally failed", wrote Móricz a few days after the premiere, who felt that the forced intervention had turned his work into an operetta. In 1942, he revisited it and rewrote the stage version in the spirit of his original idea: the story of Zoltán Szakhmáry can only end in fire.

József Attila Theatre
