The program of the opening:
At the event, Dr. László Papp, mayor of the Rightful City of Debrecen, followed by Kata Vizi, the managing director of MODEM, will share his thoughts, then the work of Imre Égerházi will be presented by art writer Balázs Feledy, and finally Attila Égerházi, leader of the Djabe band, will conduct a subjective musical exhibition.
About the exhibition:
The painter of quiet contemplation was born on September 1, 1925 in Hajdúhadház, as a late descendant of the 17th century fresco painter János Egerházi Képíró from Mezóbánd. In the early 1930s, he moved with his parents to Debrecen as a small child, where he later studied at the free school of fine arts under the painter József Menyhárt.
His art in Égerházi was shaped by his own life, landscape, community and personal experiences. His works are characterized by the allegorical representation of natural objects, houses and landscapes - especially the Great Plain, Hortobágy and Transylvania - but the atmosphere of sacredness, transience, and deep contemplation also permeates the works. The editing order of his pictures was shaped by folk art and art nouveau, his color culture (blue, gray, brown, in his late creative period: red, ocher yellow, sun colors, lighter textures) was influenced by post-impressionism, and his artistic attitude was shaped by the painting of the Great Plains.
The exhibition undertakes to present the broad spectrum of his rich oeuvre: it showcases the fruits of his prolific creative periods, the characteristic themes he chose, and unique technical solutions. An extraordinary series of 9 paintings based on his near-death experiences will be displayed in a separate room, which will be shown together for the first time since his birth. In addition to the artefacts on display in the exhibition space, the dreamers of the exhibition will also present an animated film made from paintings created as a result of near-death experiences, and Imre Égerházi will also narrate the experiences in archival footage.

The primary point of view of the MODEM is the reconstruction of its character in the Hungarian art life, with the cooperation with new elements which strengthen the relation with the local and regional community as well as with the broader international cultural scene in a longer term perspective and form and run a multilevel and manifold network. We aim to create a brand new narrative which change the public opinion about the role of the contemporary art and make the visual art the part of the everyday life. An important goal of our programme is to represent the diversity of the contemporary art and to display the attendant art in different forms. In the selection of thematic exhibitions, not only the visual art gets into focus but the architecture and social science as well.
The Antal‒Lusztig Collection also plays a major role in the MODEM’s life, since it is permanent part of the ground floor exhibition room. The items of the collection are presented by newly arranged exhibitions twice a year. Furthermore, the professional and accurate cataloguing of the collection has started simultaneously as well.
