Qualitons: Kexek, Szőke Barna

2025-02-12T18:00:00.000Z

In the Hungarian Albummm! series, we listen to the albums in the composer's or artist's own words, recalling their own experiences in the Hungarian House of Music library, which has a growing collection of albums, and which will be the playhouse of a Hungarian great music album. This time, Qualitons' Kex-processing album will be played on the turntable, and Gergely Horváth's host guest will be Barna Szőke, Qualitons' guitarist.

"It was more exciting than any other band when Kex played," wrote Hobo, the emblematic frontman and brilliant singer of Kex, János Baksa-Soós, who started with them and with their help, on the death of János Baksa-Soós. The three years that Kex had between 1968 and 1971 were still enough for this unrepeatable phenomenon of Hungarian popular music to continue to radiate its charisma and example to the present day. They performed frequently in front of Illés, and Tamás Cseh took to the stage for the first time during the interval of their concert. A Kex concert was at once theatre, stand-up (in today's terms) and a kind of séance. The former frontman had already been living in the Czech Republic for eight years when the oldest members of the band that more than forty years later brought the Kex songs to life were born in Mezőtúr. And when they performed them on the world-famous KEXP radio station in Seattle, they finally got some praise and spotlight at home.

If we remember listening to music when Little Richard sang on glossy black records, we also know what playing records gave music fans; dedicated listening time, deep attention, lyrics to browse and memorable covers. And even more than that, because the medium itself had an impact on songwriting; the A and B side-signs on the singles themselves raised the question of the priority and order of the songs, which led to the birth and application of the musical or conceptual concept that organised the whole album. An album is a tangible object, which also strongly shapes the personal relationship with the composers and performers. We revive the ritual of listening to records by listening together to the albums of Hungarian artists who have made an exciting contribution to the history of Hungarian popular music in some way.
