Electro Chaabi (2013)
2025-02-28T17:00:00.000Z
The Curator's Weekend, named after Fanni Zahár, will start with a free screening of a film that is, in part, somewhat related to the theme of the weekend, and deals with the music of the North African region. The 2013 music documentary, directed by Hind Meddeb, focuses on the underground music scene in the suburbs of Cairo, with the currently fashionable local music, electro chaabi. Played at street parties and weddings, the raw, dirty music is inspired by the spirit of punk and crosses local traditions and electronic beats with a hip-hop attitude. Against a backdrop of corruption and social segregation, young people in Cairo's slums dance the night away to electro chaabi.
