Kacsóh Pongrác - János Vitéz
Song play in three parts, in Hungarian, with Hungarian and English subtitles
Length of performance: 3 hours 15 minutes, with 2 intermissions.
"Be schön is this fairy tale. Pongrác Kacsóh, following in the footsteps of the poet, did not roughly erase the fairy tale's glorious dust, his wonderful, beautiful music, with its Hungarianism and its sincere folk tone, stands out sharply from all previous operetta music" - reports the newspaper Újság about the premiere of János vitéz in 1904. Incredible though it may seem, the title role was played by the great actor-actress Sári Fedák. "When I sang 'A Rose Speaks Better', the fate of the play was already decided. Everyone in the audience was crying, and I was crying with them." Since its premiere at the opera house in 1931, there has hardly been a season since János vitéz was not on the programme, and in 2023 it will be a fitting way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sándor Petőfi.
