Carl Orff: CARMINA BURANA
2025-03-01T18:00:00.000Z - 2025-05-11T11:00:00.000Z
Scenic cantata in original languages, with Hungarian, English and original subtitles
Length of the performance: 2 hours with 1 intermission.
O Fortuna. The sweeping opening motifs of Carl Orff's most famous work are familiar to all. But few people know that Carmina Burana is not an oratorio, but a work specifically for the stage. This is clear from the Latin subtitle of the piece: 'secular songs for solo singers and choir, with instrumental accompaniment and magical images'.
Tibor Bogányi has conducted the work on several occasions, and a vision of a staged performance has gradually emerged. Around the three soloists, three artists of the Hungarian National Ballet and the monumental choir of almost 100 singers, the creators have created a breathtaking spectacle on the stage of the Erkel: the 3D "magic images" will be projected on six projectors and LED screens. Traditionally, the performance is introduced by a kind of medieval "tuning in": from 2025, Orff's own work, Catulli's Carmina, later composed as a sister work to Carmina Burana, will be performed before Orff's work, set to Catullus' poems. The excerpts of this shorter but more intimate piece will be brought to life by soloists from the Hungarian State Opera Chorus and Orchestra.
Please note that the performance sometimes uses strong lighting effects, which may be disturbing for those sensitive to light.
