Sir Kenneth MacMillan / Jules Massenet – Martin Yates: MANON

2025-03-16T17:00:00.000Z  -  2025-03-30T11:00:00.000Z

Ballet in three acts

Length of the performance: 3 hours with 2 intermissions.

In the course of his career, Sir Kenneth MacMillan has managed to innovate not only the language of ballet but also its virginity: he has often tackled socially and socially sensitive, modern themes that have hardly been dared to be discussed, not only in dance but in other genres. This was the criticism that followed the premiere of Manon in 1974: although it was a huge success with audiences, the critics were shocked by the immoral story, which was until then quite unusual in the world of classical ballet. Leighton Lucas edited a score from Massenet's works for the plot of the piece: he did not score Manon, but he did select music from many of his other operas and oratorios, which was rearranged by Martin Yates in 2011. The MacMillan choreography is presented in its original set and costumes on the Opera House stage.
