Jazz greats - Dave Brubeck

As a trained pianist, he studied with renowned composers such as Darius Milhaud and Arnold Schoenberg. In 1951, he founded the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which became representative of the cool style, and in its most memorable incarnation from 1958 to 1968, Paul Desmond played saxophone, Eugene Wright played bass and Joe Morello drums. The ensemble gained worldwide popularity with their songs Take Five and Blue Rondo a la Turk, in which Desmond's veiled alto saxophone voice played a not inconsiderable part.

Odd time signatures had been used by others in jazz before, but the practice became widely known because of Brubeck's name. On the quartet's best records (Jazz Goes to College, Time Out, Time Further Out, At Carnegie Hall), everything that made the band's sound unique is there: melodic improvisations, alternating even and odd beats, and Brubeck and Desmond's contrasting solos.
