The success of our previous screenings proves it: not only the owners, but their dogs love the film too! So on 26 February, we're holding another premiere screening of "Bring Your Dog" at Bem. No need to bring a four-legged friend, of course! 🙂
🐾A former actor Lang (Eddie Peng), freshly released from prison, returns to his hometown in northwest China, but the area is being cleared to make way for a huge industrial centre and factories. Most of the residents have already moved out and the city is overrun with stray dogs, and Lang joins the poachers to help capture the feral dogs. That's how he comes into contact with a black mixed-breed dog who even has a price on his head. The two lonely, outcast souls, the black dog and Lang, slowly find each other and form a bond of friendship in the embrace of the desolate Gobi Desert.
🐾The new film by Chinese director Hu Guan (The Cow) won the top prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and has since been recognised in Warsaw, Valladolid, Jerusalem and other festivals, most recently being nominated for a Gotham Award for Best Director. Black Dog is not only a heartwarming and surprisingly humorous canine film, but also a layered sociological insight into the aftermath of the brutal industrialisation of the 2000s and the heightened anticipation surrounding the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The star of the film, alongside Eddie Peng as the marauding prison inmate, is Xin, a black mongrel dog who plays the title character brilliantly: playing the patient when he needs to, or jumping through windows and landing on his two feet in the sidecar of a speeding motorbike.
Location
Bem Cinema
In January 2016, the 108-year-old Bem Cinema will reopen its doors to the public, in a new way never seen before in Hungary: as a cinema of cult and classic films (no harm!), or as the educated French say (if you know your English): as a "repertory cinema".
