Alvin Straight is a 73-year-old widower who lives with his speech-impaired daughter Rose in the town of Laurens, Iowa. He's an old-fashioned cowboy, a Wild West figure who lives by his own values and moral code. Proud and stubborn, he refuses to see a doctor, even though his health is deteriorating rapidly, with a bad back and emphysema. When he receives a phone call that his brother Lyle has a heart attack, Alvin decides to visit him at his home in Wisconsin. He has no car, no driver's license - his lawnmower is the only means of transportation he has. He has a 350-mile drive ahead of him.
