Guided tour with Sándor Buglya at the exhibition Vision, Gesture, Experiment | 111 years of Hungarian animation art

The Műcsarnok's exhibition Vision, Gesture, Experiment... focuses specifically on auteur animation, a strong and dominant field in the history of Hungarian animation as a whole, but one that is least known to the general public. Even less well known are those borderline works of art that are difficult to categorise and whose optimal "surfaces" of presentation are also difficult to define.

Our selection focuses on autonomous animation efforts in Hungary and works made in Hungary, validating three approaches in the three central halls of the Kunsthalle. In the first room, entitled Vision, four great dreamers - Áron Gauder, József Gémes, Marcell Jankovics and Sándor Reisenbüchler - will welcome visitors with an emblematic work, an animated summary of their personal philosophy. Sándor Reisenbüchler would have been 90 years old this year, so his exceptional work will be commemorated with a screening during the exhibition.

In the second room, entitled Gesztus, we selected films from the extremely rich Hungarian auteur film heritage that have a personal message, most of which have a style, a particular technical or dramaturgical feature that makes their creator instantly recognisable, and a frame of which, like a fingerprint, clearly identifies the master.

In the third room, entitled Experiment, a selection of masterpieces will be presented, including animations that are now considered tame, such as Ferenc Rófusz's The Fly, the only Hungarian Oscar-winning animation to date, which was a novelty at the time of its creation with its "background animation" technique. It was also the unconventional use of material that made Ferenc Cakó a pioneer, as his now emblematic homo animations have captivated a wide range of audiences in their time. This room also houses the moving images created in the Béla Balázs Studio, where animation is functionally linked to music and visual art, often avant-garde, or creates a new quality together with them, and where we can see unique moving images that can be cautiously called film, but which were not even made for the screen...
