Fragmented images and incomprehensible but forever remembered words, the smells burned into the mucous membranes, the taste of breast milk or yeast, the first blows and touches - the adult narrator of Are you Jewish? traces his earliest memories to understand the feeling that has accompanied him throughout his life: alienation.

Gábor Németh's language accurately evokes the disturbing events of childhood, and does not lie about their cruelty. Who am I, what do others think I am, and where do I belong? - are the first and most elementary questions that a person who has just put down roots in the world is confronted with, only to never find reassuring answers. The world is slowly becoming a place of its own, and yet it remains permanently homeless.

Gábor Németh's series of collected writings begins with his 2004 novel Zsidó vagy? The volumes of the life's work edition contain both previously published texts, not previously published in book form, and new texts, which are supplemented and put in a new light by the author's commentaries - in the case of Zsidó vagy?

The programme of Kalligram Publishing.
