"It is not because of a lack of love of language that there are no words in these films. It is because, in my view, language is in a degraded state. It can no longer describe the world we live in." (Godfrey Reggio)
In the Hopi language, Koyaanisqatsi denotes life out of balance. The title word also refers to a life of chaos and unrest.
Directed by Ron Fricke
Music by Philip Glass
