Szaffi is a romantic story that follows the growing up of Jónás Botsinkay. The plot of the film begins in the early 18th century, in the final days of the Turkish occupation. Ahmed Pasha surrenders Timisoara during the siege against the Austrian imperial armies, hiding his treasures on the estate of his Hungarian friend and ally, Baron Gáspár Botsinkay. The two men and their young children then flee the Austrian-ruled country on the flooded river to the Black Sea. The Pasha's newborn daughter Sofia is swept away and is found and raised by the kind gypsy woman Cafrinka as Safiki. Gaspar Botsinkay, who emigrates to Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, is thrown into a dungeon, and after his death, his son Jonah is taken in by gypsy wanderers...
