I'd say he introduced himself well. You've already introduced yourself before, I don't want any more.
First impressions are the most important, they say. In various social interactions, there are certain social norms that help - for example, they dictate to whom and how one should introduce oneself in certain situations. They provide guidance on what constitutes the perfect handshake or the science of a memorable pair of personality lines. However, even with the best intentions, introductions can't always be successful, and in preparing for our exhibition, we've experienced the challenges. To whom, under what circumstances and what do we want to show - what can we show - of ourselves, individually and collectively?
Schedule
We talked a lot during the process. About what we've been doing since graduating; whether we've overcome our creative crisis; and whether we've found jobs in the industry. About why we seem to be ready from the first metre of our careers. About how easily creative experimentation becomes a safety game, while we race for scarce funding and the attention of the art market. And also about the challenge of maintaining a creative, formative attitude while the insecurity of our existence hangs over us like the sword of Damocles.
In the end, we decided to make a statement about this particular situation, instead of hiding conflicts of interest with a possible answer, and to opt for voluntary disclosure instead of polite introductions. We share ideas that have been gathering dust in a drawer for a long time; we share initiatives for new works; we reflect on alternative readings of existing works. With works that may differ from our previous series in subject matter or use of tools, and that are at different stages of creative work, we present ourselves as we really are: in a moment of perpetual change and path-finding, half-finished both individually and collectively.
