Dugattyús x Museum of Fine Arts // Well-aging

Nowadays, the phenomenon of ageism or well-aging has become widely recognized, reflecting the idea that old age is not (only) a difficulty, but also an opportunity for different ways of thinking and behaving. In art history, periodization has traditionally focused much more on the early years of artists than on the later stages of their careers. The art of old age has long been considered taboo, often interpreted as decline. This perception is reflected more broadly in society, as modern Western urbanized societies continue to value youth over age.

This event revolves around the themes of the Shortening Future graphic exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, as the works featured are not “late” creations but rather exciting elements of an artist’s life work—dynamic new beginnings, free and playful exercises without stakes. During the discussion, participants will explore questions such as: What experiences arise from decades of practice? What advantages come from seeing one’s own body of work in perspective? What can we let go of, and what can we allow ourselves, at a certain age or after certain achievements?

In collaboration with Dugattyús, the Museum of Fine Arts presents a special series of discussions addressing topics related to current exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts and the Hungarian National Gallery. Experts, artists, and public figures share their thoughts on the questions raised by the exhibitions.
