Movie screening in Budapest Ballroom
As part of the Budapest International Film Festival’s Cinescape program, we invite you to a truly special screening in the heart of the city - inside the grand Ballroom of Budapest City Hall, the very place where the Budapest City Council usually holds it's meetings. We’ll be screening Fiume o morte!, Croatia’s official Oscar submission and winner of the Grand Prize at the Rotterdam Film Festival.

On the ruins of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1919, a delusional poet, Gabriele D’Annunzio, seizes the city of Fiume by military force and proclaims himself its ruler. His grotesque 16-month reign is brought to life by the citizens of Rijeka in Igor Bezinović’s innovative documentary - a playful, almost comedic reimagining of historical events.
Following the screening, join us for a conversation about the film’s historical and political resonance with historians Balázs Juhász, associate professor at ELTE BTK's Department of Modern and Contemporary Universal History, and Gábor Egry, researcher at the Institute of Political History.
