"There is an old, somewhat cynical theatrical saying that goes: if you can't think of anything, put on a Shakespeare play." This was how ballet choreographer László Seregi put it at the time of the premiere, but one of the most famous Hungarian ballet classics thoroughly refuted this self-deprecating statement. Seregi's spectacular, colorful ballet, admittedly inspired by Zeffirelli, fundamentally reformed traditional narrative dance theater, bringing to the stage a blood-filled Renaissance story that won over both domestic and foreign audiences with its superbly crafted situations, and picturesque scenery, as well as its lively human content and attention to small details, won over both domestic and foreign audiences alike. Its brilliance has not faded since then, and its popularity and success have remained unbroken for decades.
