A multi-ethnic ensemble, they perform their songs in 25 languages. American pianist Thomas Lauderdale founded the group in 1994 with the aim of combining classical, jazz, Latin, and pop music genres to create a unique sound. Their debut single, "Sympathique (Je ne veux pas travailler)", was released in 1997 and became an instant hit.

They have toured the world, playing at the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the opening ceremony of the renovated Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Kennedy Center, and the 80th Academy Awards. In 2014, they were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Like Beth Hart, Pink Martini will make up for their postponed concert, originally announced for 2025, in 2026.
