Busójárás is a folk custom celebrating the arrival of spring and the end of winter, which originated from the masked carnival celebrations and dramatic folk traditions of the Sokacs, a predominantly Roman Catholic South Slavic people living in and around Mohács. This custom is also known as poklade, which is the Croatian equivalent of the word 'carnival'. The Busójárás in Mohács has been included in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2009. Since 2012, the Busójárás in Mohács has been considered a Hungaricum, which is primarily due to the success of Mohács' civil society, busó groups, mask carvers, and costume makers.
