We have witches at home

2026-03-19T18:00:00.000Z  -  2026-04-10T17:00:00.000Z

Who is willing to descend into the darker layers of their psyche and return from there with knowledge?

The figure of the witch evokes both unease and curiosity, working on the threshold between the visible and invisible worlds: cursing and healing, while also seeing into the deeper layers of our consciousness. She dares to be repellent. She does not try to deny her own burdens. Her knowledge, filled with wounds and experience, is at once alluring and threatening. In fairy tales, she often appears as an outcast, frightening figure, yet she is much closer than we might think. She crosses our path when we surrender to the pull of the subconscious, intuition, and mysticism.

Rewriting the local codes of the witch on a personal horizon also calls into question the seemingly static place of other characters from traditional folklore — just as the iron-nosed witch emerges as a symbol of empowerment, the busós must confront the challenges of late-capitalist production.

The works in the exhibition approach witchcraft and the supposedly immovable figures of local myths from the perspective of the collective imagination, reshaping elements of folklore in their own image through the artists’ personal experiences. In the space, elements of ancient Hungarian mythology blend with the fantastical motifs of legends, together sketching the contours of a world beyond the visible.

Lili Bárány graduated in 2024 from the Animation MA program at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. In her hand-painted animations, the human body, puppets, and various grotesque figures appear as recurring motifs, while she is preoccupied with the digestibility of darkness, the workings of curses, and the possibility of their release.

Adél Csököly graduated in 2024 from the Intermedia Department of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts. In her textile-based works, she is currently working with tufting techniques. She is interested in the reinterpretation of everyday phenomena, the world of shamans and legends, and Hungarian rituals alike.

Ráhel Gáti graduated in 2025 from the Animation MA program at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. In her current work, she explores mediumship, visions, and dreams. Alongside animation, she experiments with creating sensory installations that open up the possibility of connecting with the transcendent.
