Schedule
Krisztián Gergye (HU): “That Black Had to Be Painted Out” (Jenő Barcsay) – Anatomy of a Life’s Work
Part of the 12th International Monodance Festival
In the next installment of the interdisciplinary performance series “That Black Had to Be Painted Out,” the entire oeuvre of Jenő Barcsay is placed within the context of a single human body’s presence. Embodied memory, transgenerational traumas, the unprocessed past, and the existential anxiety of the present come to life in a new monodance by Gergye, through the condensed presence of a solo performer.
Created for the Barcsay 125 memorial year, this interdisciplinary performance is a collaboration between the Krisztián Gergye Company and the Ferenczy Museum Center, inspired by the life’s work of Jenő Barcsay.
“I was happiest when I exhibited my last black paintings, for which I was severely reprimanded. Very severely. They even wrote in the [guest]book that I didn’t deserve my life.” (Jenő Barcsay)
