How is the post-socialist city made?

The process is laborious and grubby, we recommend you experiment with it in the summer kitchen! (In the meantime, feel free to customize it to your own taste, as we all do.)

Schedule

Take a big piece of waxed canvas and a big(?) city in Central(?) Eastern(?) Europe(?)!

Prepare a sufficiently sized enamel pot, measure 45 years into it, starting from 1944, then if you are still able to, add 34 more, strictly while stirring. (Your kitchen scale should then read 2023. If not, repeat the process.) Pour in some water, but be careful, you want to be able to keep your head above it! Let it simmer over low heat.

Season it with salt and pepper to taste.

When sufficiently tender, according to your memories, appetite and interest, try to divide it into portions you think will be pleasant to work with. (Don't expect a well-defined endproduct, but rather a slightly problematic mass of constant dependence, broken into smaller pieces for practicality only.)

Let it rest. But not for too long, it may crumble on you.

Place the portions of the mass on the already prepared waxed canvas, and start to pull it gently towards the edges of the table, so that it is of even thickness. It depends on the quality of the materials, but cracks, tears, rips, and splits will occur. (Don't) blame yourself!

The filling is up to you – it can be salty, sweet, or even bitter. So many houses, so many traditions. Now it can go in the oven!

Serve it fresh, in the right style and only give it to whom you think deserves it! Enjoy!

Preparation time: 1945 to 1989

Cooking time: from 1989 (until today?)

If you liked (or didn't like) the recipe of the post-socialist city, follow us on facebook and instagram for exclusive content!

And if that's not enough, come to Telep on June 9 to take a look at the experimental summer kitchen of the girlscanscan collective, where we can start digesting together what we've cooked for ourselves!

The girlscanscan collective was founded in the winter of 2020 within the Bercsényi Advanced College of Architecture, and since then we have been engaging with our 20th-century built environmental heritage. We are looking for answers to how this heritage affects us, the children of post-socialism, and what we have brought with us from it into the twenty-first.
