Schedule

This spectacular performance, based on the life and art of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, invites the audience into an exotic dream world, drawing on the rich expressive power of music, moving image and dance. As in a strange guided tour, the dance images reveal the beauty and challenges of female destiny, passionate love stories, images of an impressive culture, carnival atmosphere and a defining moment in Frida's life. Inspired not by Kahlo's life story, but by her career and her art, we present a vision of a dramatic yet colourful and vibrant world in its own right.

Frida Kahlo, born 115 years ago, has Hungarian roots on her father's side, but people know her primarily for her Mexican ties. Her cult is multifaceted, and people relate to and are drawn to her in many ways: an ideal, an icon whose zest for life was unparalleled, even though her life was full of tragedies and stormy loves. To many, she is a muse, because her unique and individual character inspires many to this day, whether we are talking about women's equality, art, courage, forward-looking ideas or an amazing vitality.

Frida is also a well-known and popular artist in Hungary, so this lecture gives us the opportunity to add new perspectives to our understanding of her life and art. This large-scale production will allow us to immerse ourselves in the surprising visual and atmospheric world of her art and her native Mexico. Our aim is to do justice to the legacy of such a great artist, to preserve the most significant turns of his life and the magical power of his sometimes poignant paintings, and to give contemporary form to the various waves of emotions full of passion and extremes.
