Marina Herlop

On her early albums (Nanook - 2016, Babasha - 2018), Marina Herlop, the Catalan pianist-songwriter-producer, was a performer flirting with modern classical tendencies, singing in unusual registers, who only occasionally added effects and other instruments to her predominantly piano songs, and her talent only really shone through on her 2022 album Pripyat, but then very distinctly and with a radically different sound from her predecessors.

On his hypnotic third album, which takes a vibrant, polymorphic form, he channels the posthuman habitat and form of the titular place into music. Herlop's alien yet sophisticated vocal acrobatics actually draw inspiration from South Indian Carnatic music, and the songs' sound is electronic, glitchy, artpop. Destroyed and rebuilt structures, layers and layers underneath, a fictional language that still speaks out through the power of song about the shape-shifting everyday life of our time.

An artist who has only just found himself, it will be a joy to watch him create - because Marina is an extended version of his songs on stage, the songs are born on stage.
