Interesting Readers' Circle V - Caliban and the Witch

2023-09-03T13:00:00.000Z

The 5th Interesting Readers' Circle will be about Silvia Federici's book. The feminist Caliban and the Witch gives a broad picture of social conditions in the Middle Ages, and then focuses on the witch-hunt. Key words that make the story interesting and evergreen: capital accumulation? class divisions? a smear campaign against a marginalised social group? Hmm, that sounds familiar.

Schedule

The language of the text will be English and the language of the conversation will be Hungarian.

The text is pages 264-300 of the book posted in the event:

The Great Witch-Hunt in Europe: Introduction, Witch-burning times and the State Initiative, Devil Beliefs and Changes in the Mode of Production, Witch Hunting and Class Revolt, Witch-Hunting, Women-Hunting, and the Accumulation of Labor.

(Big font, lots of pictures, pages are flying)

This reading circle focuses on the witch-hunt, but the writing as a whole is very cool and covers other historical topics. If you're in the mood for a read-aloud, start with the introduction!

Event structure: the reading circle hosts will start with some important facts, put the readings into context, and you can expect a more relaxed circle or a little group game to start. Then everyone can share what they remember about the text - this is done on a first come, first served basis. Then, within a reasonable time frame, you can contribute to what others have said (joint discussion, fiddling, etc.).

Organizers: Anna Viola Sáfrány, Edina Nikoletti
