6 June 1944 - the day of the Normandy invasion. On the beach code-named Omaha Beach, Allied soldiers attempting to take shelter from boats are caught in the crossfire, with massive bloodshed. Dead, wounded, torn to shreds, the screams of dying men. Captain Miller (Tom Hanks), who has just made it through the first pit of hell, and his remaining men face another almost impossible test. Leading a small team, he must penetrate the enemy rear to find an American soldier, Private James Ryan. On orders from the high command, he must be immediately demobilised as his three brothers were killed almost simultaneously on different fronts of the war, and the army is paying tribute to the family's tragedy.
But the long and dangerous journey leaves everyone wondering: why is the life of this one man worth more than the nine soldiers sent to save him?
