Charles Dickens' hit novel Twist Oliver has inspired many artists throughout the ages. The iconic work has been the basis for numerous paintings and films. In 1960, the British Lionel Bart undertook a remarkable feat: he wrote the libretto and music for the musical Oliver! Andrew Lloyd Webber even called Bart the "father of the modern British musical". The production, directed by David Merrick, made its Broadway debut in 1963 to great acclaim and went on to become one of the world's best-known musicals.
In addition to a traditional, historically faithful approach, the production also has a strong emphasis on modernity, 21st century staging techniques and visuals. The creators bring 19th-century London, with its foggy, dangerous, realistic and dark side, to life, while focusing on the unquenchable light of good and the will to win. All the while, they use a distorted mirror to show their audience where life events in the play can lead, how to avoid them, and that there is always a chance for a new beginning.
The translator of the play is Kornél Hamvai, the lyrics are by Péter Tompa. The choreographer is Péter Lajos Túri and the musical director is Péter Drucker. The monumental scenery is the work of Tamás Rákay, the costumes are the result of the great work of Alida Yvette Kovács.
Tailored to the characters' physiques and special needs, the results support the experiential theme of Vajk Szente to the maximum. And the catchy melodies played by a live orchestra create a special atmosphere. The family performance - recommended for children aged 12 and up - will provide memorable moments for both young and old.

The Hungarian Theatre was built in 1897, and has been renovated several times, so between 1966 and 2000 the National Theatre company played in the building. During this period, the directors were Béla Both, Endre Marton, Péter Nagy, János Sziládi, Dezső Malonyai, Imre Csiszár, László Ablonczy, István Iglódi. Its repertoire consisted of classical and contemporary masterpieces of Hungarian and world literature. The artistic directors and directors were Tamás Major, Endre Marton, István Egri, Gábor Székely, Gábor Zsámbéki, Tamás Ascher, Imre Csiszár, László Vámos, Imre Kerényi, Ferenc Sík, István Iglódi, Csaba Ivánka, Géza Bodolay, Miklós Szurdi.
Since 2000, the Hungarian Theatre of Pest has been playing within its well-trodden walls, with a company of artists who have grown up in the traditions of the old National Theatre and who continue to preserve them. For a decade, István Iglódi was the director of the theatre, during this period the directors were Imre Csiszár, Attila Vidnyánszky, István Pinczés, Sándor Guelmino, and the guest directors were Gábor Berényi, János Bruck, Gábor Czeizel, Sergei Masloboichikov, László Vándorfi. Áron Őze became the director of the theatre, Sándor Guelmino the artistic director and Imre Sipos the manager. János Zalán took over the management of the theatre on 1 January 2015.
