Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker has been an essential part of Christmas preparations for decades. It returned to the Erkel Theatre in December 2018 during the renovation of the Opera House, but from November 2022 it will be back on the stage of the Opera House, where it will be performed in the classical ballet tradition, but in line with the dance standards of the 21st century. A new story ballet choreographed in 2015 by internationally renowned Nutcracker specialist Wayne Eagling and Tamás Solymosi, which is now back in its original exhibition, is based on the classical music. It is an important milestone in the life of the Hungarian National Ballet that such a world-renowned artist has created choreography for the company, which has been performed with great success and to full houses ever since.
"Wayne Eagling and Tamás Solymosi's choreography is new, modern and sufficiently bright, but at the same time it is a kind of homage to the legendary work of Vassili Vajnonen and Gusztáv Oláh. Nóra Rományi's costumes are classic, beautiful and timeless." (Eszter Veronika Kiss, Mno.hu)

Hungarian State Opera
The Hungarian State Opera House is the only theatre in Hungary with a large company, specialising in operas and ballets. The building is one of Budapest's most important 19th century monuments. It was built in neo-Renaissance style according to the plans of Miklós Ybl. The richly decorated interior was designed by renowned Hungarian artists, including Mór Than, Károly Lotz and Bertalan Székely.
