Since birth, Bubby has lived in a basement with his abusive and fanatically religious mother. He has never left home, given his mother's admonition that the world beyond the door is contaminated with toxic fumes. The unexpected appearance of the father shatters the family idyll, and the illiterate, under-socialised Bubby takes the radical step of donning a gas mask and setting out to explore the real world.

An adorably bizarre paraphrase of Kaspar Hauser. Not surprisingly, it's one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite films.

The Australian director Rolf de Heer's mind-bender premiered almost 30 years ago to the day at the London Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize in Venice a few months later.

Admission is free for over 18s and those with strong nerves.
