Isaac Davis, a successful comedy writer, leaves his television job to devote all his time to writing fiction. But instead of writing, he tries to explain his failed life and his unhappy relationship with women. So far, with little success. His wife Jill leaves him to finally move in with her lesbian lover. Isaac's high school sweetheart Tracey also breaks up with him because she is young and wants to study. And Mary, the over-educated and over-neurotic journalist, introduced to him by his best friend, is just like him, and therefore unbearable.
In one of Woody Allen's most popular films, he professes his love for his permanent home, Manhattan, airily elegant in its grime and bustle.
